Goji berries or Lycium barbarum called, “tianjingcao” (vitality and vigor of nature) in traditional Chinese medicine, have been used for millenia for alleviating mineral deficiency, combating heat distress, to treat the liver, the kidneys, hypertension, lower back problems, to boost fertility and enhancing eyesight.
Goji berries have been used in Tibetan Medicine as well, in many healing formulas for thousands of years to threat hot and cold disease due to their neutral and sweet energetic properties. It has also been used to bring tonic and immune building strength to formulas in which they are used in combination with other botanicals.
Recent scientific studies have confirmed that several phenolic compounds and flavonoids are present in the leaves of the Goji plant, which exhibit significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and enzyme inhibitory effects.
The two dominant polyphenols found in the Goji leaves are Chlorogenic acid and Rutin. Alongside these two compounds, a large variety of other compounds were also found, which include: Neo-chlorogenic acid, Cryptochlorogenic acid, 5-O-Caffeoylquinic acid, 5-O-Ferruloylquinic acid, Kaempferol and others.
