Goji berries have been classified as a superfood and that is for very good reasons, because they contain:
- 18 amino acids, including the 8 essential ones
- Vitamin B-complex, A, C and E
- 21 trace minerals including copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium, potassium and also selenium and germanium which are known anti-cancer agents
- 6 essential unsaturated fatty acids, like alpha-linoleic acid and linoleic acid
- a variety of phytochemicals and antioxidants including zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and other carotenoids, riboflavin, ascorbic acid, thiamine, nicotinic acid, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein and xanthophyll
- 8 polysaccharides and 6 monosaccharides
- phenols that have antioxidant properties
- beta-sitosterol and other phytosterols which are anti-inflammatory agents that had been found to lower cholesterol, and has been used to treat impotence and prostate enlargement
Because goji berries are an abundent source of antioxidants that strenghten the immune system and protect the body from inflammation because they fight free radical damage.
Goji berries protect the eyes from macular degeneration, one of the main causes of blindness, therefore are a very powerful treatment for this disease and are irrefutably beneficial for the vision due to their high levels of antioxidants, which stop the damaging of the retina from excessive exposure to UV light and other forms of oxidative stress.
This study found that daily dietary supplementation with goji berry for 90 days increases plasma zeaxanthin and antioxidant levels as well as protects from hypopigmentation and soft drusen accumulation in the macula of elderly subjects.
This human supplementation trial shows that zeaxanthin in whole goji berries is bioavailable and that intake of a modest daily amount markedly increases fasting plasma zeaxanthin levels, offering help in maintaining macular pigment density.

According to the traditional eastern medicines, goji berries are a very good source for liver protection.
Research showed that Betaine in the goji berries, after ingestion starts the production of Choline in the liver, which facilitates the detoxification process. It is also known to enhance memory, encourage muscle growth, protect DNA and against fatty liver disease.
LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharide) is effective in reducing necroinflammation and oxidative stress induced by a chemical toxin, thus it has a great potential use as a food supplement in the prevention of hepatic diseases.
Good news for people that like their alcoholic beverages - The results suggest that LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharide) is a promising agent to protect the liver from hepatotoxicity and fatty liver induced by ethanol intake.
Also a good source for kidney protection agents, because goji berry helps the liver and kidney to restore strength and vitality. It might help in getting rid of kidney stones and in cleansing the blood.
LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharide) improves the renal function and alleviates the inflammatory reaction in the kidneys of diabetic rabbits. In addition, the prevention effect of LBP is better than the treatment effect of LBP.
Goji berries help to control the amount of sugars that are reaching the bloodstream, which prevents the very unconfortable highs and lows caused by issues in balancing glucose levels. Goji berries exhibit significant hypoglycemic effects and insulin-sensitizing activity by increasing glucose responsiveness. Combined with a healthy diet, goji berries are a very good candidate for a natural diabetes remedy, without side effects and present an easy way to increase the insulin sensitivity of a person. Goji berries are the best choice for people having issues balancing their blood glucose levels and dealing with its unconvenient effects.

Goji berries provide an extremely high levels of antioxidants (like vitamin A and C),which constitute the basic building blocks of strenghtening the immune system to the point to be able to easily fend off colds, bacterial and viral infections as well as neurodegenerative diseases.
This study suggests that LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharide) has a highly significant effect on tumor weight and improves the immune system..
To examine the systematic effects of L. barbarum on immune function, general well-being, and safety, they tested the effects of a standardized L. barbarum fruit juice at 120 mL/day, equivalent to at least 150 g of fresh fruit, the amount traditionally used, for 30 days in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in 60 older healthy adults (55-72 years old). The group showed a significant increase in general feelings of well-being and showed a tendency for increased short-term memory and focus between pre- and post-intervention. In conclusion, daily consumption of Goji juice significantly increased several immunological responses and subjective feelings of general well-being without any adverse reactions.
The study population included 50 healthy adults aged 55 to 72 years. The results indicate that Goji juice increased antioxidant efficacies in humans by stimulating endogenous factors and suggest that continued use beyond 30 days might help prevent or reduce free radical-related conditions.
Goji berries are THE best source of beta-carotene, that helps promote healthy skin and is a strong candidate for a natural skin cancer treatment. The seeds of the goji berries contain 6 essential unsaturated fatty acids, like alpha-linoleic acid and linoleic acid, vital for a healthy skin.
This study showed that mice drinking 5% goji berry juice (Lycium barbarum) are protected from UV radiation-induced skin damage and offers protection against skin disorders. Furthermore, two known inducible endogenous skin antioxidants, haem oxygenase-1 and metallothionein, were found to be involved in the photoimmune protection. The results suggest that consumption of the goji berry juice could provide additional photoprotection for susceptible humans.
According to the traditional eastern medicines of Tibet and China, goji berry consumption greatly benefits the reproductive system and the goji berries are used to increase fertility by boosting the vitality of the sperm and their number. Due to it's feminine "yin" aspect, goji berry is used to treat infertility in female patients with premature ovarian failure and the inability for normal ovulation.
This study done on rats, shows that goji berries protect against testicular tissue damage induced by heat exposure, raise antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase in the reproductive system, raise sexual hormone levels and protect against DNA oxidative damage to testicular cells, providing support to the eastern traditional medicine claims of treating infertility. The present findings support the folk reputation of L. barbarum fruits as an aphrodisiac and fertility-facilitating agent, and provide scientific evidence for a basis for the extensive use of L. barbarum fruits as a traditional remedy for male infertility in China.
In this study they irradiated testicles with radioactive Cobalt, destroying their ability to reproduce and after treated them with LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharides) which had significant protective effects against damage, allowing rats to achieve near-complete recovery with LBP treatment !!! Pretty amazing!
Another study on rats that demonstrates the pro-sexual effect of LBP on normal and sexually-inhibited rats, and LBP may modulate sexual behavior by regulating neurogenesis.
This was the first study on humans, reported from outside China that has examined the general effects of the orally consumed goji berry, Lycium barbarum, as a standardized juice. These results clearly indicate that daily consumption of Goji berry juice for 14 days increases subjective feelings of general well-being and energy levels and improves neurologic/psychologic performance and gastrointestinal functions, validating one more time the claims of the eastern traditional medicines of increasing energy levels, moods and digestive health, this time in human subjects.

Of the antioxidants present among goji berry benefits, carotenoids like zeaxanthin and precursors to vitamin C are the most extensively researched. High levels of these compounds give gojis a reputation for battling cancerous cells, fighting tumor growth, decreasing inflammatory cytokine levels and detoxifying the body of harmful toxins.
Goji berry benefits also extend to other parts of the body thanks to their polysaccharides and glycoconjugate compounds that promote unique bioactive immunomodulating, anti-tumor and antioxidant activities in the brain, liver, reproductive organs and digestive tract. Gojis are reported to have anti-aging properties and show anti-tumor activities against various types of skin cancer cells by inhibiting tumor growth and inducing apoptosis.
